Celebrated around the world, Aldeburgh plays host to Benjamin Britten’s Centenary celebrations running from November 2012 – November 2013.
Benjamin Britten Centenary
For all the curiousness of the Suffolk County, the works of Benjamin Britten are certainly some to explore.
Born in Lowestoft in 1913, Benjamin Britten began composing music when he was just 6 years old and had written Chaos and Cosmos by the time he was 13.
Benjamin moved to Aldeburgh where, inspired by the beautiful landscape and sea view he wrote much of his exceptional work. The towns famous landmark, Maggie Hambling’s Scallop is a tribute to Benjamin inscribed with the words “I hear those voices that will not be drowned”, taken from his opera Peter Grimes and stands proud on the beach.
Aldeburgh Music
Founded by Benjamin Britten in 1948, the Aldeburgh Festival is part of the year-round programme of events at
Aldeburgh Music and is held at the Snape Maltings Concert Hall – a building renovated and designed by Britten and his friend Peter Pears which is now a spectacular 832-seat venue and has become one of the UK’s best-loved concert halls.
Centenary Events
The first big event of 2013 is a weekend of cross arts exploration at the start of February, featuring the world premiere of 'In Britten's Footsteps' by Chris Watson.
As part of the celebrations and to follow in Benjamin’s footsteps the White Lion will be holding
Friday afternoon music lessons once a month for the pupils of Aldeburgh Primary School.
